Secondary School Student Wellbeing
In Secondary School we have established a thorough and evidence-based focus on wellbeing. It is crucial for our students to experience a safe and encouraging school environment in which they can flourish in their individual God-given gifting. In our community, we are committed to facilitating an understanding that each young person is known and loved by God. Below are some of the ways in which we support our students holistically in Secondary School.
In response to research completed as a school regarding the value of positive relationships, we moved to a Pastoral Care model allowing all Secondary School students to be a part of small, single-gender classes. These classes are led by a teaching staff member and provide the opportunity for spiritual, emotional, social, and academic support. Home Room classes meet once a day; it’s a safe and welcoming space that provides all students with a trusted adult to celebrate their successes and share in their struggles. Families are encouraged to partner with their child’s Home Room teacher throughout the year. A brilliant team of staff who oversee each year group, work alongside the Home Room teachers to support each individual young person. Year Advisors provide a program that is taught to promote positive wellbeing and tackle current issues facing our teens.
Once a fortnight all Secondary School students meet together in our Mutli-Purpose Centre (MPC) for Chapel. Our Chaplain works with a team of students to organise Chapel services that are welcoming, fun, challenging and inclusive. Our students are allowed the opportunity to ask the ‘big questions’ and to enquire about faith. On the alternate fortnight Stages 4 and 5 students ‘Merge’ together to build quality relationships with one another. They do so while participating in an activity of their choice. Some examples of these activities are; card tricks, reading, bush walking and drama club. This is another opportunity for students to widen their support network through the formation of positive relationships across the school.
We are privileged to have three qualified counsellors as part of our Wellbeing Team. They meet with students who are identified as at risk and/or in need of support beyond the classroom. Caesar the Golden Labrador is also part of our Wellbeing Team and brings joy, peace and comfort to many of our students.
